Dr. Owen Pyke, MD
As a member of the patient-centered bariatrics care team at NYU Langone Hospital–Long Island, I help patients lose excess body weight and improve their health. I use minimally invasive and robotic surgery techniques that involve small incisions.
I was raised in Queens and Long Island after emigrating from Jamaica at an early age. I am pleased to provide surgical services to people living in the greater New York area, including Long Island.
I gravitated toward medicine early in my academic career because it offered a unique path for serving the community and lifelong learning in the sciences. After graduating from Amherst College with a degree in neuroscience, I completed graduate studies in public health as well as a joint MD/MBA degree. My older brother and sister are doctors; they served as my earliest role models in medicine
Weight loss surgery can resolve related health conditions, including type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and obstructive sleep apnea, to increase your lifespan, which is why I chose this field of medicine. I am fellowship-trained in bariatric, minimally invasive, and robotic surgery. My rigorous training has prepared me to perform some of the most complex surgical weight loss procedures, including revisions to repair or change a previous surgery.
My research has focused on health literacy, surgical education, global surgery, and obesity surgery, particularly in the management of ulcers related to weight loss surgery. I have a special interest in the study of disease at both the population and individual level.
I am dedicated to compassionately caring for patients to help them achieve the best possible bariatric and surgical care outcomes. I enjoy working with patients after surgery to help them reach and maintain their weight loss goals.
