Dr. Gloria B. Chu MD

I was interested in science during high school. Later, after college, I worked in a research laboratory at a biopharmaceutical company. After a year, I realized I wanted to make more personal connections and spend more time working with patients, so I decided to go to medical school.

I chose to become a surgeon because it is a hands-on specialty that requires creativity and skill. In some ways, it is similar to the creative arts, such as drawing and painting, that I enjoy. My patients have a wide range of conditions, including obesity, gallbladder disease, hernia, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and gastrointestinal stromal tumor, which is a tumor of the gastrointestinal tract. Other conditions I manage include bowel obstruction, diverticulitis, and appendicitis.

I perform a variety of procedures. I can remove the gallbladder and appendix, and I repair inguinal, ventral, hiatal, and umbilical hernias using minimally invasive robotic surgery. I remove cysts and lipomas, which are benign tumors composed of fatty tissue, and perform small bowel and colon resections. In addition, I can remove the spleen if it has been injured and perform fundoplication surgery to manage GERD.

I also specialize in bariatric surgery. I perform gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy using robotic surgical techniques. In addition, I work with a team of dietitians and bariatric nurses to ensure comprehensive care.

I strive to do what is in the best interest of my patients. For the right candidates, bariatric surgery can be lifesaving. I guide my patients through the process. I enjoy advocating for them and helping to improve their quality of life.
